Amarillo may not be Hollywood, but it’s showing up on screen more than ever. We know that stuff gets filmed here. We had Yellowstone here in downtown Amarillo not that long ago, filming.

Why Amarillo’s Buildings Feel So Cinematic

We were able to see The Barfield in all of its glory recently. There were talks of Yellowstone being here. Streets in downtown were blocked off. I mean, it's great when things like that happen here.

There’s no shortage of buildings in Amarillo that look like they belong on the big screen. From quirky roadside attractions to historic gems oozing with character, these local spots practically scream movie set. Whether you're a film buff or just love Amarillo architecture, here are six buildings around town that look like they were made for the movies.

Golden Light Cantina: Route 66 Star Power

  • Golden Light Cantina - Historic Route 66 - This location on Sixth just screams "put me in the movies". The oldest restaurant in Amarillo has a lot going for it. The locals still love to walk through those doors, but it wouldn't be unusual to see it used in a Hollywood movie. It has that cinematic vibe.

The Art Deco Beauty of the Paramount Theater

  • The Paramount Theater Building - Polk Street, Downtown Amarillo - This is no longer a functioning theater, but it is still standing and still holds on to its 1930s Art Deco charm. The sign is still there for us to gaze at. Imagine seeing this staring back at us from the big screen in our favorite movie. Not hard to imagine.

The Melancholic Majesty of The Herring Hotel

  • The Herring Hotel - 11th and Polk - This may be abandoned, but it is still fabulous to look at. Imagine all of the stories it could tell. Imagine all the movies this would be perfect for in the right scene. The Herring was in talks to be brought back to its former self. So let's hope that happens sometime. Until then, it would make a beautiful backdrop.

From The Amarillo Building to The Nat

  • The Amarillo Building - Polk Street - The home of several businesses in downtown Amarillo, so it could be used for inside shots. It is also a very unusual building on the outside. There is no way to not know you are in Amarillo when it has it right on the building. A nice shot in downtown Amarillo.

  • Santa Fe Building - 9th and Polk - The Santa Fe building is stately and historic, perfect for political dramas or western-style law shows.

  • The Nat - Sixth Ave - This place had it all, live music, and at one point a swimming pool. The building is very unusual looking, which makes it perfect for Hollywood. Whether you want music, romance, mystery—it’s all here.

More Movie Magic Beyond Buildings

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to noticeable buildings and landscapes in our area. Of course, we have other places that have been used and can be used again, like Palo Duro Canyon and the Cadillac Ranch. Amarillo has a little bit of everything, which makes it perfect.
