Watch Blondie Cover Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’
Throughout her celebrated career, Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry has been lauded for her groundbreaking ability to blend genres. For example, the group's 1981 hit "Rapture" was the first song with rapping to reach No. 1 in the U.S.
Still, we’re pretty sure you’ve never heard her like this.
During a performance at the Rockland Bank Trust Pavilion in Boston last night, Blondie launched into a surprise cover of Lil Nas X’s hit single “Old Town Road.”
The song has been a worldwide hit in 2019, holding the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for a record-tying 16 consecutive weeks so far. Blondie’s cover is a more subdued version of the track. Harry’s melancholy croon over a minimalist backbeat gives “Old Town Road” more of a grunge aesthetic than the original country-rap version.

The Boston performance was part of Blondie’s summer, co-headlining tour alongside Elvis Costello and the Imposters. The trek continues into August before ending its run in Seattle.
In addition to her continued work with Blondie, Harry will release her autobiography in October. Titled Face It, the memoir will chronicle Blondie’s rise from the New York underground music scene to worldwide stardom. The book will also highlight the singers artistic collaborations, acting career and activist efforts.
“I know there will be questions asked, because in putting this together, I realized I have led a very full life and couldn’t possibly cover everything in just one volume,” Harry admitted in a press release announcing Face It. “I’m prepared for the best and the worst comments, much like when I have released an album or done a big show. I don’t have a thick skin, but I do have a pretty good sense of humor.”
