Bob Marley is the subject of a new biopic which is being developed by his son Ziggy Marley, in association with Paramount Pictures, Deadline confirmed. While no details have been revealed, it’s likely that the film will follow Marley Senior’s rise from childhood in Jamaica to becoming one of the world’s leading reggae musicians.

He formed the Wailers in 1963 then continued into a solo career when the band split in 1974, although he continued to use the name as Bob Marley and the Wailers. His album Exodus, released three years later, secured his place in musical history. He died in 1981, aged 36, after having suffered from cancer for several years. He was survived by his wife Rita Marley – a member of the I Threes, the Wailers' backing singers – Ziggy and his siblings.

In a 2017 interview Ziggy Marley, a multiple Grammy-winning musician in his own right, told Mercury News: “I grew up with my parents, and I know my parents before the were legends… I’ve experienced them before they were legends. I didn’t grow up thinking, ‘Oh man, I am the son of this great legend.’ That perception is not part of my reality.”

He recalled his “exciting” childhood surrounded my music, saying: “I liked to play with the equipment, the lights and with drums, and going to concerts.” He added that his father’s biggest gift to him had been love, noting: “What I’ve experienced from the legend of Bob is that the whole world gives us love, because of him. He is love.”
