Watch Dave Grohl Jam at Ronnie James Dio Memorial
Dave Grohl took part in a jam of Thin Lizzy and Motorhead covers as part of the fifth-annual Ride For Ronnie event in California yesterday.
The Foo Fighters leader was joined by Ricky Warwick and Robbie Crane of Black Star Riders, and former Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson, for renditions of “Jailbreak” and “Bomber.”
You can watch Grohl’s drumming performance below.
Hosted by Eddie Trunk, the Ride for Ronnie event commemorates the life of Ronnie James Dio, who died of cancer in 2010. The ride aims to raise awareness and funds for cancer prevention and cure research. Last year’s show brought in more than $50,000 for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.
"When Ronnie passed away, a lot of people wanted to send money to cancer research, and I was like, but how do you know where it’s really going to?" the singer’s widow, Wendy Dio, told UCR in 2017. "Some of these big companies do good work, but a lot of money gets eaten up into administration. So, 14 really good friends of Ronnie’s, who’ve been good friends of his for almost 30 years, we all got together and formed the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.
“We have specific goals of where the money goes – and also, when we write the checks, we write on there what research it’s going to, because I think that’s very, very important. The first year with the ride, we had about 150 riders and about 500 people attending. … We’re growing and raising more money for cancer, and keeping Ronnie’s music and legacy alive."
