Finding The Confidence To Attempt The Unthinkable

While working out last week, Steve (owner and trainer) asked me when was the one time in my life when I felt like I was in the best shape. Without hesitation, I told him right now. At 33 years of age, I'm in the best shape I've ever been in.
My whole life has been an awkward mess when it comes to athletics and fitness. As a senior in high school I was six feet tall and weighed 125 lbs. I was a lanky mess that was never the strongest, most coordinated, or talented. A month and a half into this journey, and I feel more like an athlete than I ever did standing on the sidelines or sitting on the bench as a kid.
Last night, I decided to attempt something I've never been able to do. I've always wanted to do a one handed push-up, but have never succeeded. While the rest of the world was sleeping, I had a small victory. I nailed it.
Not only do I feel like I'm in the best shape I've ever been in, but my confidence is coming back. The workouts, in class and the one-on-one training, are tough and challenging. When you make it through you not only feel great from the workout, but also because you didn't give up. You fought, and won. You pushed yourself to do things you didn't think you could do.
The past few times I've gone in for my training with Steve, he has mentioned how when I started at Nick's I wouldn't have been able to do the workouts I'm doing now. He's right. When I arrived I was a gin swilling, chain smoking insomniac that was extremely underweight. I've cut back on the cigarettes and alcohol significantly, and my weight is up to a healthy place.
