Fred Durst’s New Movie, Starring John Travolta, Makes Just $3,000 Its Opening Weekend
Fred Durst’s new film, The Fanatic, is being called a box office bomb. The movie, which stars John Travolta playing the obsessed fan of a movie star, earned just $3,153 its opening weekend, debuting in 52 theaters across the U.S.
This actually wasn’t the Limp Bizkit frontman’s directorial debut. Durst directed 2007’s The Education of Charlie Banks, which starred Jesse Eisenberg and received fairly good reviews. Durst also called the shots for 2008’s The Longshots starring Ice Cube. Critics gave the film a lukewarm response and The Longshots made less than $12 million at the box office on a $23 million budget.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, who called The Fanatic a “career low” for John Travolta, the film made just $60 per theater. In a handful of theaters, The Fanatic grossed $10 or less over the weekend, while the highest gross was $736 at the Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood.
The Fanatic currently holds a 5.7 on IMDb and a 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert’s website gave the film a zero out of four, while the Wall Street Journal actually had some praise to throw Travola’s way.
The Fanatic will become available via streaming services Sept. 6.
