I recently came across a post on social media asking about community gardens. I'd heard about them, but didn't know we had any in the Amarillo area.

The great news is that there are some community gardens in the Amarillo area, helping residents get access to healthy food and learn how to grow their own.

What Exactly Is A Community Garden?

I've spent most of my life growing up in the middle of town. When someone says garden, I think flowers. This explains my initial confusion when it came to gardens tended to by neighborhoods.

Why would a whole neighborhood get together to grow flowers?

Come to find out, community gardens are resources for their neighborhoods that provide fresh produce. Usually they're tended to by members of the surrounding community, and they all partake in the harvest.

Amarillo Has Had Several Over The Years

Doing a quick search on Google turned up several results. Some of the websites, blogs, and social media pages haven't been updated in a while. So that makes it a little tough deciding on which ones are still active, and which ones aren't.

High Plains Food Bank has The Garden. Their garden is used to feed members of the community, and they actually use it as a way to help teach people how to manage their own garden in our sometimes brutal climate.

Another is 7th Street Garden of Hope. Their website states that it is a project of Patsy's Place Transitional Home and Amarillo Food Bank. They also offer classes and instruction on having your own garden.

Other Gardens In The Area

I was able to find a few in Canyon, as well. Canyon Grows rents out plots. Also listed is the Palo Duro Kiwanis Community Garden.

If you want to get involved with a community garden, I recommend contacting area food banks. That seems to be the best way to find out which ones are active and what they offer.

Amarillo Botanical Gardens

The Amarillo Botanical Gardens is an oasis in the High Plans. If you haven't already been to this beautiful place, be sure to pop in for a visit. You'll fall in love with the beauty and color given by this place.

Amarillo and Canyon Farmer's Markets

Amarillo and Canyon have some great community and farmers' markets.

They take place in the summer into early fall. It's an opportunity to find fresh produce, one-of-a-kind items, jams, jellies, bread, and more.

If you haven't had a chance to visit you should.

Canyon Farmers Market - Square in Canyon
Saturdays 8am-12pm

Amarillo Community Market - 1000 S. Polk St.
Saturdays 8am - 12:30pm

Golden Spread Farmers Market - 3701 Plains Blvd. Parking Lot
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 7 am until sell out.
Early in the season of this market produce is scarce as the season moves on and crops are harvested, you'll see more and more of your favorite veggies.
