We all know that after we get a good amount of rain here in Amarillo, we'll see different types of creatures come up from the ground since it's wetter and cooler. Obviously we aren't seeing any of that right now with record heat and no precipitation expected any time soon.

However, once that rain DOES finally come, we'll see things such as worms coming up from the ground. Now, we seem to think these worms are harmless, and the majority of the time, they are. Central Texas has proven though that some of these "harmless" worms can actually be rather harmful.

The worms that typically find their way up to ground level are earth worms, ones you could literally go fishing with if you wanted. Recently, the Central Texas area received a bunch of rain, then the hot and humid conditions that followed brought some of these worms up to the surface.

They've recently been dealing with what are called hammerhead worms, and they look exactly like you think they would. Imagine a hammerhead shark and their appearance, just in worm form. These things can grow up to 15 inches, and are very unique compared to the other worms underground.

These hammerhead worms are actually poisonous. They release toxins that can be harmful to humans, and if your pet were to eat them, it could end up being fatal. One of the more interesting things about them is that you are told NOT to cut these worms in half like others.

How come? They can apparently regenerate and turn themselves into TWO worms. Yeah, not exactly and ideal situation for anyone. Now, we don't typically get humid enough for these worms to come out and play in Amarillo, but there are times where we do. If you see them, don't cut them in half and see if you can find a way to dispose of them properly.
