Announced at E3 2016, Injustice 2 is the follow-up to NetherRealm Studios' popular DC Comics fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. Taking up some time after the conclusion of the first game's story, Injustice 2 brings with it a new threat to the populace of Earth, along with new heroes and villains to battle it out for dominance in the face of whatever monster lurks in the darkness of space.

Previously only announced with a vague 2017 release timetable, we now know Injustice 2 will be making May 2017 that much more super alongside events like Free Comic Book Day and the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

NetherRealm's creative director Ed Boon tweeted out the news over the weekend, though his tweet was just as cryptic as it was illuminating.

We haven't heard much about Injustice 2 since the August reveals for Harley Quinn and Deadshot, and with the game only five months away that's a bit of a surprise. Still there are at least two gaming conventions between now and May 16 that could reveal a tiny bit more about who and what to expect from Injustice 2. The roster already features Batman, Flash, Superman, Aquaman, Gorilla Grodd, Blue Beetle, Supergirl, Atrocitus and Wonder Woman. Stalwarts like the Joker and Lex Luthor are likely to make the cut, but it'll be interesting to see what new blood does indeed find a way onto the full roster.

With Injustice 2, we also know there will be a great deal of customization to each version of your characters, meaning your Supergirl could be drastically different from your best friend's, from the outfit to the move set. NetherRealm has been rather tight-lipped about the rest of Injustice's details, like where the story will take us and how the game will balance all this customization in online multiplayer. Given the success of the first game, and NetherRealm's pedigree, we're willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to maintaining so much secrecy.

Injustice 2 will be out on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The first game got a massive special edition with a cool Batman and Wonder Woman statue, but there is no word just yet about any such version of the sequel.
