I have long lamented the fact that I can buy a lotto ticket but can't play a game of cards in the state of Texas. That might be changing soon in Amarillo.

Poker Clubs Are A Thing In Texas

If you're new to the Lone Star State and enjoy playing poker, just know that there are ways you can still enjoy the game. You may not be able to go to a casino and play, but there are poker clubs and card houses. Check out this link for a more in-depth look at how they operate within the law in Texas.

A poker club is simply that, a place where people who love the sport get together to play. I've been hoping to see one in Amarillo, personally.

Amarillo Poker Club

You can find them on Facebook. Their facility is really nice. Their tables look great. They've practically got the whole place set up and ready to go. You can click this link to see photos and videos of Amarillo Poker Club. I'm keeping every finger and toe I've got crossed hoping this happens.

So what's the hangup? The city.

Pump The Breaks, Poker Fans. We're Not Out Of The Woods Yet.

According to a lengthy post on Facebook, there's a decision being waited on by the city on whether or not this business can open. It's been a little bit, and no word yet on what the verdict is.

I'm wondering if this could be one of those "no news is good news" situations.

I Think It's Time We Get Poker In Amarillo

I understand that poker is considered gambling, and gambling can be a problem. If you have a problem, take care of it. There are tons of resources out there to help you beat it.

But that honestly can't be the argument against it.

We have a rainbow of brightly colored, attention grabbing scratch-off tickets sitting at the counter of gas stations all over town. Some of which cost a very pretty penny to purchase. You don't even have to be 21 to see them. As a kid you can eyeball those pretty tickets all you want and daydream about buying one.

You can buy a lotto ticket and no one blinks an eye. We've got bingo halls. All of these are gambling.

No one is begging for casinos and the problems that come with them. All that's being asked for is the space to sit and play a card game in a nice atmosphere with our friends. Nothing too nefarious about that.
