Amarillo, Texas is a place full of ghost stories and urban legends. Ask anyone in town, and they'll be able to tell you about numerous spots that are supposedly haunted. Once in a while, though, you come across a story or legend that sounds too ridiculous to be even remotely close to true. Here's a look at three of the strangest ghost stories in Amarillo, and whether or not they're fact or made up internet hooey.

The Haunting Of Cadillac Ranch

Heads up; this one is hard to get through without rolling your eyes. According to legend, the most famous landmark in all of Amarillo is lousy with ghosts. Supposedly, Cadillac Ranch is the home of a seriously upset specter and some spine-tingling shrieks.

The story goes that a woman was traveling one night near Cadillac Ranch. It was an ill-fated journey that would end in tragedy. This woman was supposedly involved in a horrific traffic accident and tragically lost her life. Her restless spirit is now haunting Cadillac Ranch and her disembodied screams fill the night air.

Is there any truth to this? A wreck happening near Cadillac Ranch doesn't seem to be outside the realm of possibility. However, when I ask around no one seems to bring this up. I found this information in a haunted places database, and I have to wonder where they got this info. Also, how bad would it suck if your soul was stuck watching sweaty tourists spray-paint car skeletons for the rest of eternity? No wonder she spends all night screaming in agony.

Summit School Of Terror

Summit Elementary School in Amarillo is the subject of a crazy number of ghost stories. One of my favorites is the haunted swing. It's a swing that never stops. It just keeps going, no matter the weather or time of day. Where the real scary stuff supposedly resides is in the boiler room.

One of the stories about the boiler room is that it can't be cleaned. It remains dusty no matter how hard you clean it. Supposedly, you can draw a stick figure on the floor and watch it disappear before your eyes. If you're a person with bad allergies, I can see this being something you'd be scared of.

One story I found online about the school sounds like a load of crap. It's like someone ripped off the Nightmare On Elm Street and made it about Amarillo. Supposedly, a janitor who hated kids haunts the place. He supposedly hunted down former students, killed them, and disposed of the bodies in the boiler. I wonder if his name was Fred because that story sounds really familiar. Did he attack them in their dreams too? I seriously doubt this one is legit.

Tradewinds Love Triangle Of Death

Possibly my favorite story is of Tradewinds Airport in Amarillo. It has all the hallmarks of a good ghost story. There's romance, mystery, and carnage. At the very least, this would make for an excellent Lifetime Halloween movie.

The story goes that the love between a man and his wife had cooled. For whatever reason, he begins spending more time away from home and eventually finds himself in the arms of a lover. Things between this man and his mistress would heat up, and he would keep spending more time away from home.

At some point, his wife had all of his philandering ways that she could handle. She decided to follow him one night and see for herself if her suspicions were true and followed him out to Tradewinds Airport where his plane was sitting in a hangar. She followed him into the hangar and discovered him in the arms of his mistress.

As you can probably guess, she loses her whole mind and murders both of them. Some stories say she then kills herself, others have her disappearing into the night. Either way, there's supposedly a haunted hangar out at Tradewinds Airport. The smell of perfume fills the air when the spirits are near. Disembodied voices fill the hangar late at night. The two lovers are locked forever in the hangar where they met their demise.

How true is it? Who knows. I mention this one to people and it's new news to most of them. I also haven't been able to find news articles about a murder-suicide on the tarmac. True or not, it's a good story.
