Texas is a state that is notorious for its size. It's a state known for being where everything is bigger. Words are cheap though. It's easy to claim to be big, it's another thing to be a town in a state that is closer to six other state capitals than it is to the capital of the state it's in. That, however, is the story of Dalhart and Austin, Texas.

How Big Is Texas? Just Ask Dalhart.

In a post on social media, an interesting point was made regarding the size of Texas. According to the information that was provided, residents of Dalhart are actually closer to six other state capitals than its own.

The six state capitals Dalhart can get to easier than its own are:

  • Santa Fe, NM
  • Denver, CO
  • Cheyenne, WY
  • Topeka, KS
  • Lincoln, NE
  • Oklahoma City, OK

The one that is the most insane to me is Cheyenne. You could theoretically cross three states and somehow still travel a shorter distance than if you traveled to Austin from Dalhart. Cheyenne is only a 6-and-a-half-hour drive from Dalhart. Austin would still be three hours away.

Putting The Size Of Texas Into Perspective

It's one thing to say that a town in the northern part of the panhandle of Texas is closer to six other capitals than Austin. It's another to try and put that into perspective. For instance, you could point out that it takes almost nine hours to make the trip from Dalhart to Austin. You could also point out that it's a 563-mile trip.

You could also point out the longest highway in Texas, which takes about 11 hours to drive the entire length. The Lone Star State is massive.

At the very least, and if we need to put some kind of silver lining on this, it's nice to see that Dalhart, Texas comes with so many possible vacation destinations. Dalhart should put that on a billboard as you're coming into town; Town Of A Bunch Of Options To Go Other Places. They could also make a joke about being far enough from Austin that weird hasn't rubbed off on them yet. The ball is in your court Dalhart tourism board.
