Popular Amarillo Playground Closes for Summer Resurfacing
One of the best parts of summer in Amarillo is all of the parks and playgrounds we have in town. A lot of my Saturday mornings during the summer are spent at the playground with my kids.
One of the most popular playgrounds in Amarillo is the one at John Ward Memorial Park, the park formerly known as Medi Park, or Medical Center Park. It's a nice playground that constantly gets tons of visitors.
Amarillo Parks and Rec recently announced that the playground at John Ward Memorial Park (Medi Park) is going to be temporarily closed starting today (June 2). While this is definitely disappointing, it is for a very good reason.
Why Is the Playground Closing?
If you've been out to the playground recently, you've probably noticed that some parts of it really need to be resurfaced. The good news is that the resurfacing process has started.
There are sections of the playground where you can see the wear and tear from years of kids burning off energy before naptime. There are tears, and, in some places, chunks of the surface are missing.

Once the resurfacing is finished, the playground will be back to its former glory. That’s exciting, especially since the playground is such a great spot. Plus, you'd hate for your kid to trip while they're running without looking where they're going out there.
What You Can Still Do at the Park
There's still plenty to do at John Ward Memorial (Medi) Park. The walking trail is one of my favorites in town, and watching the ducks while you go for a stroll is nice. Of course, you'll still see people fishing, and there's always the Discovery Center nearby.
Hopefully, the weather plays nice and the resurfacing project won't take longer than necessary. I know my kids will miss the playground while it's closed. Check their social media for updates.
