When Friday night began, we had five area teams from Amarillo and Canyon alive in the Texas high school football playoffs. When the evening was over, we were down to three teams alive.

Unfortunately, they can't all win all the time as much as we'd like them to. Two victories have now set up one heck of a matchup that will be right here in our backyard.

Who's Out?

Let's start with who fell on Friday night. Tasocsa drew a VERY tough matchup against Aledo, and they fell 42-0 to the Bearcats. Aledo is the 8th-ranked team in Texas, and 66th nationally, so it's not like they fell to a team they were expected to beat.

The other school to fall was Palo Duro in a hard-fought battle against Anna, losing by three, 38-35. The loss brought a disappointing end to what has been a GREAT season by the Dons, and they should definitely hold their head high.

Who's Still In?

Randall had the first game of the day, and they did their best to set the tone for the area as they won a tougher-than-expected battle against Burnet, 24-14. Burnet had a bit of a tough season, but began to defy expectations a bit in the playoffs but the Raiders handled business to move on.

West Plains took on Lampasas and easily dispatched the Badgers by a score of 42-7. Their impressive season will continue on.

Canyon battled Brownwood and fended off a furious rally by the Lions, who scored 21 points in the 4th quarter, but snuck out the win, 31-28.

What's On The Schedule For This Week?

Because of the results, AISD has been eliminated from the playoffs entirely, which means the 5A title won't be coming home. That leaves the three CISD schools to battle for a state title in the 4A bracket.

Randall will now take on a very good Stephenville squad, who went undefeated this season, sitting at 12-0. They are the 17th-ranked team in Texas according to MaxPreps, so the Raiders will have their hands full. The game has yet to be assigned a day and time.

The other game? Well, this is the matchup I mentioned above. West Plains will take on Canyon right here in Canyon at Happy State Bank Stadium. That game is slated to take place on Friday night at 7 pm. The atmosphere in the stadium is sure to be beyond electric, but sadly, it also means we will lose one area team from the playoffs.
