Amarillo’s Overdose Awareness Event Returns
It's become an increasingly big issue, not just in Amarillo, but in the country. Deaths caused by accidental overdose. We just saw Hayden Panettiere unexpectedly pass away, and early indications say she passed away from an accidental overdose; however, we are awaiting autopsy results to confirm that.
One thing allegedly found at the scene was a bottle of Narcan on the bed, indicating that there was either an attempt to use it or the intent to. Narcan is a nose spray administered to reverse the effects of an overdose, and it's something that should be more common than it is.
The Narcan Lady
Angie Duncan decided something needed to be done about this. She lost a son due to an overdose and had to suffer through the unimaginable. She met another person who lost their child to an overdose and asked her if she needed to have any Narcan on hand. The woman didn't know what Narcan was.
That's when Angie knew something had to be done. In 2023, she founded Texas Panhandle Overdose Awareness. It was intended to educate people about what Narcan is, what it can do, and how to access it. Now, Angie hands out Narcan all over Amarillo and has taken on the title of "The Narcan Lady" because of it.
2nd Annual Overdose Awareness Event
Last year, she decided to put it more in the forefront and held an event for overdose awareness, to talk about the effects of Narcan, etc., and it was a huge success. So big, they're doing it once again.
The 2nd Annual Overdose Awareness Event will take place at Sam Houston Park on Saturday, August 22nd from 5-9 pm. There will be live bands, bounce houses for the kiddos, food trucks, a silent auction, as well as free Narcan and Narcan training. Later in the evening, there will be a candlelight vigil.
