H-E-B Ranked #1 in America, But Amarillo Still Doesn’t Have One
When you think about just how many different grocery store chains there are in America, it makes you start to wonder a bit as to why Amarillo doesn't have many of them.
Our options have been VERY limited when it comes to grocery stores, even though a lot of cities across the country have multiple options at their disposal. Yes, we tend to scream from the rooftops about having a couple more options, but they never come to fruition for one reason or another.
H-E-B Grabs A Huge Honor
One of the stores many scream for is H-E-B. The Texas grocery chain is so big that people have been known to make the drive to Lubbock from Amarillo, just to go shopping there. I mean, it's just a grocery store, right?
Shhh, don't say that too loud, you're liable to start a fight. If you're one of those people who makes the drive, you now have something to back up your claim. H-E-B has been named the TOP grocery store in America, according to a survey done by dunnhumby.
How Did H-E-B Beat Out The Giants
The survey looked at five different things. Price, promotions & rewards, quality, digital, operations, and speed & convenience. As you can imagine, H-E-B ranked at the top, or very near the top, in all of those categories.
The biggest things you hear people talk about when mentioning H-E-B are the lower pricing, as well as the quality of the fresh food they have. I mean, I can't disagree with either of those. H-E-B was my store when I lived in Austin, so I experienced all of those things.
Who Else Was On The List That Amarillo Wants
There were three stores on the list outside of H-E-B that I've heard a lot of rallying cries for. Costco checked in at number four on the list, Aldi came in at number five, while Trader Joe's made the list at number seven. These are all grocery retailers Amarillo has been asking for.
As far as Amarillo getting an H-E-B, especially after the expansion in Lubbock, it still comes down to getting a distribution center closer to Amarillo to make it feasible. As for Aldi, they plan to open another 180 stores across the United States, and recent job listings in Amarillo made us think we were getting one. Alas, it doesn't appear that's the case...but we aren't 100% sure of that yet.
