As Amarillo finally starts to emerge from the artic snowstorm and gets back to normal, we have to start thinking about our local businesses. According to KAMR Meteorologist Maria Pasillas, Amarillo saw 4 inches of snow over four days.

How the Snowstorm Affected Amarillo Businesses

Due to the severe weather and for the safety of their staff, many local businesses closed their doors. Those who chose to stay open felt the sting of slower business.

When storm systems like this move through our area, our local business owners suffer. If their doors are closed, they are not making money.  If they stay open and no one is coming in to purchase goods or food, they are not making money because they are probably paying out in wages, utilities, and not bringing any money in.

These closures hurt our local businesses. Unlike big corporate businesses that can bounce back from a storm, our locals need an influx of business to recover.

The residents of Amarillo can turn this storm into something positive for our local business owners.

Ways Residents Can Help Businesses Recover

Here's how you can help our local businesses bounce back after the winter storm this week.

  • Shop at local stores rather than national chains.
  • Order takeout or delivery from restaurants affected by closures. (You’re probably tired of leftover soup by now)
  • Share business social media posts to boost awareness.
  • Reschedule visits or appointments for services that were delayed or canceled.
  • Encourage spreading the word among friends and neighbors.

Why Supporting Local Shops Matters

Our local businesses are important to our local economy.  By spending your hard-earned money with our local businesses, you are keeping money in the area.  Since our business owners are local, the money you spend with them stays in Amarillo.  They are also our neighbors and friends raising their families here in Amarillo, so you are helping support Amarilloans.
