Limp Bizkit Almost Caused Kerry King to Quit Slayer
Oh boy, we almost lost Slayer for good… and Limp Bizkit are to blame! During metal’s relative lull in the ‘90s, Slayer guitarist Kerry King was so pissed off by Limp Bizkit’s success that he almost hung up his axe.
Limp Bizkit have been on the receiving end of a lot of hate the past two decades, but this may be the most extreme reaction to Fred Durst and co. we’ve ever heard. Sure, Fred Durst was banned from Ukraine, but that wasn’t for his music! Kerry King almost banned himself from Slayer permanently during the ‘90s according to a new interview.
“I was really jaded for a while back in the late ‘90s,” King told UDiscoverMusic for An Oral History of Thrash Metal. “I couldn’t understand why Limp Bizkit was big. It affected me – I didn’t want to play music. I thought, if this is the way that music’s going, then f—k this, I hate it. That’s why Jeff Hanneman wrote so much of our 1998 album Diabolus In Musica, which is too funky for me.”
Good thing Kerry didn’t call it quits, because despite some less-than-beloved Slayer albums in the ‘90s, the thrash legends came roaring back in 2001 with God Hates Us All. Slayer would go on to attain their highest charting position (No. 5) for 2006’s Christ Illusion, only to beat it once again by hitting No. 4 in 2015 with Repentless.
You can see Slayer continue reigning on their monstrous tour with Lamb of God and Behemoth this summer!
