Thirty-five years ago, a professor went to Big Bend National Park and left with some fossils. Those fossils turned out to be a new species of dinosaur that is now being called Aquilarhinus palimentus.

Duck-Billed Dinos

According to a report from KXAN in Austin, Professor Tom Lehman discovered the fossils in the 1980s.

This new species of dinosaur is one the duck-billed species. These types of dinosaurs were prevalent plant-eaters in the Mesozoic Era. The distinct jaw of this dino discovered in Big Bend is what set it apart from the rest.

It Took 35 Years To Identify

The reason it took 35 years to identify the fossils, is because of the condition they were in when they were found. The fossils were stuck together and "badly weathered."

A Significant Discovery

What makes this a significant discovery is that it points to the fact that Texas might have been home to more prehistoric species than previously thought.

The fossils are being kept at the Texas Vertebrate Paleontology Collections at the University of Texas, Austin.
