Amarillo Drive By Shooter David Winfield Making It Easy For APD
Things just keep getting easier and easier for the Amarillo Police Department.
While it seemed to be a bit difficult to figure out who did it initially, now it's becoming an open and shut case.
David Winfield, the 18 year old accused of terrorizing Amarillo with drive by shootings on Labor Day is fessing up left and right.
You may recall them picking up a family member on tampering of evidence. It was then we found out that Winfield had already confessed to the shootings, but there was still one that was outstanding that they needed to figure out.
That was the case of Laura Ashley, the lone death in the shootings. Amarillo PD was able to connect the dots back to Winfield on that one and ultimately added a murder count to his charges.
Well they won't need to do a whole lot of investigating on that one. According to court documents, Winfield "gave an oral recorded statement in the presence of officers of the Amarillo Police Department, admitting that he had committed the offense alleged above.”
Any time you get someone to confess to doing something, the process becomes a whole lot easier. Now the hard part is trying to figure out the cause and reasoning for what he did.
We've seen reports that Winfield was high at the time and wasn't aware of what he was even doing at the time. Now I'm not a legal expert, but I don't believe insanity by way of drug use is a compliant defense.
The next steps in the case at this point are the official indictment, then trial. Winfield is still being held at the Potter County Detention Center on a $600,000 bond recommendation.
