When you look around Amarillo, you realize we are growing. And not just growing, but at a rapid rate. It seems every day that some open land has a signed popped in it with "coming soon".

All of that is great, and we love seeing that more and more is floating into the Amarillo market. However, even with all this growth, we still have areas in Amarillo that need updating, not growth.

One of those areas is the Barrio. A lot of houses in that area are around, or even over, 100 years old, and the median income of the area is below much of the city.

It's an area that was once completely forgotten about, but in recent years, there has been a lot of attention on it. The Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee has made it their mission to make it a better place to live.

They recently announced they've teamed up with the Woda Group Development company and together they plan to bring in some new, affordable housing for people living in the area.

The Tecova Terrace project is slated to bring in 80 new apartments, and they will be affordable housing apartments.

Many in the Barrio district make below $25,000 per year, which makes it hard to be able to afford any kind of housing, and if they can, they have choices to make about amenities. Do they forgo gas and use space heaters? It's not a decision anyone wants to make.

To be exact, 47% of the residents living in the Barrio make less than $25,000, so there is a clear need for affordable housing.

The new building will be built at Southeast 28th and Aldridge Street, and aside from being able to provide the affordable housing, they're hoping it will help bring economic growth to the area and some further development to it.

The costs for the apartments will vary between 30%, 50%, and 60% of the area's median and income, and construction will begin next year.

Amarillo Landmarks: Negative Yelp Reviews

Yelp can be a strange and angry place. That's what I found out recently when I decided to sort the reviews by "lowest rating" first.

I was okay with the people upset over bad service and what not. But I came across a few reviews that, for lack of a better word, left me speechless in their scathing negative reviews on some of Amarillo's most iconic places. Prepare your self for plenty of head shaking and "I dunno" shrugs.
