Amarillo, Texas Winter Exit Plan with Warmer Days Ahead
Amarillo has definitely had a roller coaster of weather lately. We have been able to enjoy some "fake spring" weather. One day, it's record-breaking heat, and the next, it drops thirty degrees. If you don't like the weather wait five minutes and it will change is something we hear a lot around here.
With the nicer weather here in February it gets us thinking about the upcoming spring and summer months. We are dreaming about consistently warmer weather. We know that what we have been experiencing is in no way the end of winter. We know we will see more freezing temperatures. We will probably even see more snow.
Texas Panhandle Weather is Already Trying to Fool Us
It's something that we have had to get used to. It doesn't mean that we don't want to do a countdown to when we can leave that winter jacket at home. Things like that to keep us looking forward to really help us in our day-to-day survival.
Even though we will see some warmer days followed by stretches of colder temperatures, it is helpful to know there is an end in sight. We typically see nicer weather consistently in March. Heck, the kids get out to enjoy spring break so it figures that it should be sunny. Not so fast.
Amarillo, Texas First & Last Freeze Dates
According to the Texas Weather Guide, the average last day to freeze in Amarillo is much later than that. Yes, we can warm up nice during the day and have overnight freezing temperatures. We can even see barely above freezing on some days.
On average, Amarillo can expect its last freeze to occur on April 13th, after the first freeze was expected to occur on October 24th. The good news is that we have already passed the coldest day of the year, January 4th. So that is again good, but also on average. That is why many people say to refrain from planting those gardens until Mother's Day unless you get an all-clear before that.
A little more than an hour up north from us in Dalhart, they usually see the latest average last freeze on April 25th. Leave it to us in the Texas Panhandle to have the last winter laugh.
Even though we have had some beautiful days lately, it is important to snap back into reality. We still have plenty of winter left.
