Amarillo is full of urban legends. One of those is the 7 Gates of Hell. As with most urban legends, details get a bit muddy over the years. So the question must be asked, does anyone really know where they are?

What Are the "7 Gates of Hell"?

Hell if I know. I can't find much about the 7 gates that supposedly exist in Amarillo. The most famous instance of the 7 gates comes from the Hellam Township, Pennsylvania which is definitely not in our neck of the woods.

That version of the myth states that there are 7 gates and if you meander through all of them, you go straight down to the Devil's doorstep; if you know what I'm saying.

Also according to that legend, no one has ever made it past the 5th gate. This leads one to wonder how they know that the 7th gate is the one that ends with you being dragged to Hell.

It doesn't make sense, but these things rarely do.

The Amarillo Version of the 7 Gates of Hell

I was recently turned on to a conversation by a friend of mine about this very subject. Several individuals were talking back and forth about where these various types of places could be found.

Things got confusing when it came to where to find the 7 gates.

Supposedly, our local gates involve a railroad track (as these things often do) and an uncanny knack for people to die near the aforementioned railroad track. You know....because train tracks are dangerous?

It was mentioned that this all involves walking away from a bridge near the track.

Just Go North on Western Until You Can't...Maybe

The best description of where to find these gates is "go north on Western until you can't". Not very specific, but I did use satellite imagery to see if I could find some train tracks near a point where Western ends.

Lo and behold, I found some tracks and a bridge. All of it seems to be where Western "ends."

I'm not sure which direction you're supposed to walk. I'm not really sure where the gates or tunnels are that lead you to a toasty afterlife. The only thing I'm sure of is that this looks like the place in the description...sorta.

You Probably Shouldn't Go Snooping Around For This

One, you don't want to be caught trespassing. People don't like for random Hell hunting weirdos to just show up on their property.

Two, bad things can happen at night around train tracks that don't involve the Devil. Three, being around train tracks and a bridge at night seems like a recipe for disaster.

There's also the chance that this turns out to be true and you bring home some bad mojo, or worse get dragged down to your new home filled with eternal torment.
