Dr. Phil recently gave out a list of ways to stay sane while stuck in the house with your family. Some of his suggestions were really good, and some I had never thought of.

Here's my take, and a quick rundown on what you need to know:

Accept Reality. You're stuck.

You're stuck at home together, and unless you're still in the honeymoon phase this can be a tough time. You're now going to have to share the same space for a while. That's just the way it is. Accept it. Dr. Phil calls this being honest with each other.

Make A List Of Annoyances

Dr. Phil suggests writing down all of the things that annoy us and being open about it, because we'll be more likely to avoid those types of behaviors. Yeah. Right.

This sounds like a one-way ticket to sleeping on the couch for the duration of quarantine if you ask me.

Try Not To Fight

Dr. Phil says to not argue in front of children, and to have a safe word so everyone knows when to walk away from an argument. This actually is a fantastic reminder to keep a cool head. If you blow up at each other, what are you going to do? Grab some duct tape and section off the house?

Plus, safe words are fun to come up with. I like "bananas" so I can scream "This **** is bananas!" as I stomp away.

Try To Have Some Alone Time

Dr. Phil suggests rotating times in different parts of the house. Egg timer goes off, and now it's my turn in the kitchen. He also recommends headphones. That I can get behind. Just put some headphones on, crank up the Thunder 98.7 app, and watch your significant other angrily sing "War Pigs."

It's also great for drowning out the kids answering questions asked by their favorite TV show characters, and the dogs barking.

Vary Your Routine and Take Care of Yourself

Don't do the same thing everyday. That's a quick way to find yourself in a rut and losing your sanity. Your remember The Shining? Change it up, Jack.

Also, don't let go of taking showers, combing your hair, wearing fresh clothes. You'll feel better about yourself if you keep doing those things. Trust me. I've tried it the other way. No bueno.

The First Four Set The Tone

This is something I didn't think of. The first four minutes of the day set the tone for the rest of it. Your first interactions with your significant other set the tone for how the rest of the day is going to be, so be mindful and don't start it the wrong way.

That's good advice.
