As the construction continues in Amarillo and people joke that the new baseball team should be called the "Construction Cones", we still have to deal with lane closures and this week is a big week for those closures.   Here's what is going to be affecting the commute this week.

Routine Maintenance This week:

  • Monday through Wednesday, June 4 – 6, the right eastbound lane of Amarillo Boulevard will be closed from Soncy Road (SL 335) to Coulter Street and from Tascosa Road to 9th Avenue for mill and fill operations.
  • Watch for mowers along I-40, west of town, and on US 87, north of town. Please stay back and give crews plenty of room to do their work.

Overlay work on US 60 from SL 335 to the Carson County line:

  • Watch for crews Monday through Thursday, June 4 – 7, working in the westbound lanes from just east of the Carson County line to the Amarillo city limits.

I-40 and SL 335 Soncy Road

  • The northbound right lane of Soncy is closed, reducing northbound traffic to one lane from Westgate Parkway to BI-40 (Amarillo Boulevard) as work continues on constructing an additional lane for roadway widening.
  • On the westbound I-40 frontage road, the right turning lane to travel north on Soncy remains closed. Watch for vehicles with trailers turning right on to Soncy Road from the westbound frontage road as they may need extra space to make this turn.
  • Traffic on eastbound I-40 is reduced to one lane over Soncy as paving work continues. Expect various lane shifts in this area while this paving work is underway.

I-40 and Bell Street Bridge

  • The far right lane of the eastbound frontage road will be closed from near the Bell Street exit ramp to just past the Bell Street intersection for lane widening work.
  • The left through (straight) lane of the westbound frontage road will be closed from just after the Bell Street exit ramp to just past the Bell Street intersection for widening portions of the frontage road.

I-40 and Georgia Street

  • Starting Monday, June 4, the Georgia Street exit from I-40 westbound will be closed for approximately two months.
  • Exit Crockett Street from I-40 westbound to access Georgia Street.
  • Frontage road traffic will not stop until it reaches Georgia Street.
  • Traffic traveling north and south on Crockett Street will have to stop before crossing or turning onto the I-40 westbound frontage road.
  • The right lane of I-40 westbound will also be closed from the Crockett Street overpass to just pass the Georgia Street overpass, to maintain a safe work zone.

I-40 and Whitaker, Lakeside and Pullman Bridges

  • Now through Sunday, June 10, there will be nightly lane closures on I-40 eastbound from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • On I-40 eastbound, the right and center lanes will be closed each night from Eastern Street to Pullman Road.
  • The center lane will reopen each morning at 6 a.m., but the right lane will remain closed. All ramps will remain open.
This night work should not affect travel time, due to the lower traffic volume at night.
  • The left lane of the eastbound I-40 frontage road is closed 3/4 of a mile east of Eastern Street to the Whitaker Road exit ramp.
  • The left lane of the eastbound I-40 frontage road is closed 3/4 of a mile east of Whitaker Road to the Lakeside Drive exit ramp.

South Loop 335 Hollywood Road at Bell Street and I-27

  • On Friday, June 8, Bell Street will be closed in both directions at SL 335 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Southbound Bell Street traffic will have to turn right on to the westbound frontage road and then use a temporary turnaround to travel to the eastbound frontage road, then proceed back to Bell Street.
  • Traffic traveling northbound on Bell Street will have to turn right on to the eastbound frontage road and use the turnaround lane at Western Street to access the westbound frontage road, then proceed back to Bell Street.
  • The eastbound frontage road will be reduced to one lane from I-27 to Bell Street.
  • Expect various lane closure on the I-27 frontage roads in both directions from Sundown Lane to Bell Street.

As always, slow down in construction zones.  Allow plenty of time to get to your destination as the construction slows down your commute.
