Is It Safe To Live In Texas? Find Out Where We Rank, Not Good.

We talk a lot about the crime rate here in Amarillo and the fact that it's so high. Violent crimes, white collar crimes, drug busts. You name it, we've got it.

Well check this out, it's not just limited to Amarillo. In fact, the entire state of Texas isn't anywhere close to safe when it comes to safety.

A new study by WalletHub has ranked all 50 states when it comes to safety, and Texas (and the south really) just didn't rank well at all.

The categories in which they ranked were personal & residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. There were only three states that ranked behind us, and they're all essentially neighboring states. Louisiana was the worst, followed by Mississippi, and Arkansas.

Let's break down how Texas ranked in everything. Our "best" category was workplace safety where we came in 32nd out of 50. Great, I'll take the fact that we're safest at work since a lot of us spend at least eight hours per day there. It's about the last place I don't want to feel safe, just like schools when it comes to our kids.

Our worst ranking came in emergency preparedness. We were 48th out of 50 there, which doesn't exactly bode well for us when an unexpected emergency strikes. We've seen natural disasters hit the area and it showed we weren't anywhere close to prepared for it. What is going to happen when it REALLY hits the fan?

As far as the rest of the categories, we ranked 40th of 50 when it came to personal & residential safety, 37th of 50 in financial safety, and 41st of 50 in road safety.

It's the road safety one that really kind of shocked me. I truly thought we'd rank 50 of 50 there with how almost anywhere you go in Texas, people drive like they're on the autobahn in Germany. We have speed limits for a reason.

The safest state to live in? The quiet little state of Vermont. They checked in with each category inside the top 10, and three of the five were in the top five. So if you're looking for a safe place to be, looks like Vermont is your answer.
