Summer in Amarillo always brings about the need to find things for the kids to do. Sure, you want them to have fun, but you also don't want their brains to turn into french fries.

In my house, we only allow the video games to be played for four hours per day, then it's time to shut them off and do something else.

Yes, on the surface, four hours sounds like a lot, but they tend to be smart about it. Play for an hour or two, then hop off and save time for later. What can they do outside of that? Well, it's got to be something constructive.

Go outside and play, find a board game or something to play, or read a book.

See that last one? Yeah, read a book. It doesn't have to be a school type book, I mean my youngest is always reading sports books about old school players, and current ones too. I'm good with that. Want your kids to read? Get them in a summer reading program where it's fun and they get something in the end!

Yes, there are actually two of them here, one of which you may not have even known about.

The Amarillo Public Library has their annual summer reading program going on right now, while Barnes & Noble here in Amarillo has a program as well.

How Does The Amarillo Public Library Reading Program Work

First things first, you have to get them signed up to participate. Once that's done, it's all about finding a book to read.

If your kiddo (K–8) reads for at least 30 days, they'll get a brand new book of their choosing just for reading. Teens and adults can participate as well, and their prize? How about a voucher for a free bag of books at the Friends of the Amarillo Public Library book sale.

What About The Barnes & Noble Program

It's relatively similar to the Amarillo Public Library one. Get your kiddo signed up, grab the reading journal they provide you, choose a book, and you're on your way.

Once your kiddo has completed the reading journal, you bring it back to Barnes & Noble, and your little reader will get to select a new book from the ones listed on the reading journal.

When Are The Reading Programs Happening

Right now!! Signups started on June 1, and it's not too late to get yourself involved. Remember, all you need is 30 days of reading to get your prize.

I'm not much of a reader, but I do enjoy it from time to time. However, I'm definitely thinking about doing this to get myself back into reading. Join me, would ya?
