It's been one of the biggest talking points in sports around the country, and even more so in Amarillo and Lubbock. The tale of Brendan Sorsby, current quarterback for Texas Tech. In case you haven't heard, he's been embroiled in a huge battle for eligibility to play with the NCAA.

Sorsby got caught gambling, a big no-no in college sports. To exacerbate things, it was found that he gambled on his own team when he was a part of Indiana. It was in games he had no part in, but still. Pete Rose was banned from baseball for doing that, and it took until his death to lift the ban and qualify him to go into the Hall of Fame.

Sorsby was granted an injunction by Lubbock Judge Ken Curry. This injunction allows Sorsby to play for Tech this season as Curry set a trial date of February 2027...after the season has concluded. That created a whole mess of opinions and set a dangerous standard that a player can do something severely against the rules and be able to get away with it.

Now, to be fair, gambling addiction is real. It's a clinical issue, and Sorsby did go to rehab for it. However, the rulebook states it's a no-go, and the penalties are very clear. There's a reason for that, as it can influence the game. Look no further than the cases of Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier in the NBA. Porter has been banned for life, while Rozier is dealing with felony charges wrapped around it.

What's Next For Sorsby

Right now, he gets to suit up for Tech, go to practice, and get ready for the season. However, that's not where it ends. The NCAA has filed an appeal in the case, and it's now headed to Amarillo to get all sorted out. One little twist to this, though. The court's clerk noticed the required docketing statement hadn't been filed yet, and without it, nothing can be done with the appeal.

He issued a letter on June 9th giving the attorneys in the case 10 days to file the required statement, and as of June 15th, that hadn't been done. Chances are it'll be filed on the last day. If the appeal is successful for the NCAA, Sorsby will once again be ruled ineligible.

What Does This Mean For Texas Tech

Well, Tech is in a really tough spot. Right now, they are operating as if he will be their starting QB this season, and hoping the appeal isn't successful for the NCAA. However, if the appeal doesn't go their way, Tech is in a bad spot.

They'll be up against it when it comes to the QB position, and will have to roll with whoever is on the roster. That's not to say there isn't talent there, but the players they have may not quite be ready, and that could affect Tech's success this season.
