When you think of Amarillo, basketball isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Although we have some great high school basketball teams, we aren't a city focused on basketball.

So when the Amarillo Civic Center Complex posted a video showing off a basketball court, my mind was blown.

I'll be honest, I don't follow basketball at all; the only time I do that is when I randomly fill out a bracket during the college basketball season. I knew the Amarillo Civic Center occasionally hosted the Harlem Globetrotters, but I thought they brought their own equipment and court. Little did I know the Amarillo Civic Center had its own court, and apparently they just bought a new one.

A Basketball Court Since Day One

I had a chance to chat with Christopher Post, General Manager at the Amarillo Civic Center, and he shared that the Amarillo Civic Center has had a basketball court since it opened in 1968. The court they just replaced was the original court.

What the New Court Means for Amarillo Events

The Amarillo Civic Center will still be able to host the Harlem Globetrotters, but can now also host high-quality basketball events. Those include high school and college tournaments, basketball exhibition games, and charity events.

Where the Court Can Be Set Up

The great thing about this new basketball court is that it can be set up in the coliseum and North Exhibit Hall. Post said that it could also go into the Santa Fe Depot Pavilion. However, the basketball court is not available outside the Civic Center property.
