Think Amarillo Road Construction Sucks? Drive US-287 Through OK.

So I went back to Colorado to spend Thanksgiving with some family and friends this past week.

It's the FIRST time I've made the drive to and from Colorado since I moved to Texas over 8 years ago.

Sure, a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was based in Austin and it was a ridiculously long drive. From here though, we're talking a touch over 6 hours. Not too bad.

My wife had already made the drive once from Amarillo to Denver, and she mentioned there was a section of road that was pretty bumpy. I just thought to myself it was probably just some bad patchwork right?

Now the stretch I'm talking about is if you are cruising along on US-287. It's predominantly a one lane highway, no true scenery around and you drive through a lot of small towns. Very easy drive I'll say.

As we were on our way out to Colorado, we we're coming up on that stretch of road and she had mentioned it. I began to think to myself, come on it can't be THAT bad right?

Then boom, we hit it. Imagine yourself cruising over what feels like 400 speed bumps in the course of a mile or two going between 70-75 miles per hour. No joke, that's EXACTLY what it felt like. I don't care how good the shocks are on your car, you're going to feel it. It was truly one of the most uncomfortable stretches of road I've ever driven.

That got me to thinking. For how much of a headache all the road construction can be here in Amarillo, imagine what life would be like if it WASN'T happening.

Road work is done for a myriad of reasons, and sometimes it's just basic routine maintenance. However, it's the routine maintenance that keeps the road from feeling like speed bump galore. Without the road work they're doing, we'd all be replacing shocks on our vehicles every 6 months.

Having been through that, I can tell you I'll never complain about the road construction again. I value my vehicle...and sanity. I don't want to be hitting potholes and speed bumps all over town as I try to get to the grocery store.
