With the winter weather we are experiencing, cancellations and closings are something to expect. Along with closings and cancellations, there are also numerous reports of wrecks and traffic being backed up along I-40.

Roads have become incredibly slick in spots. If you have to travel; drive slow, give yourself enough time to get where you need to go. If at all possible, do not travel and stay home.

ABC7 has reported that there are numerous schools in the area starting 2 hours late tomorrow morning. Also, numerous events and meetings have been canceled for the evening. You can find their entire list here.

Amarillo ISD took this opportunity to remind parents of their district's policy regarding delays and closures due to winter weather. From an email that was issued earlier today:

  • Please drive slow on the roads and allow yourself extra time to get to school and work.

  • Students who arrive late on a snowy day will not be counted as tardy.

  • Students are urged to adequately dress for the cold conditions. If your child is in need of a winter coat, talk to your school’s counselor to see if we can find help.

  • AISD will communicate via social media, our district website and the local news media *only* in the event of a school closure. If no announcement is forthcoming by approximately 6:00 a.m., campuses will open at regular hours.

  • When school remains open, parents are encouraged to make the best decision for their individual family. Parents may choose to call their student in as absent for the day or pick up their child early from school if they deem it necessary.

It is always a good idea to check social media accounts for your child's school for information regarding closures or delays. Also, if your child's school uses an app for communication with parents be sure to check it for updates.

APD took time today to remind motorists of the perils of leaving your vehicle to warm up. While no one likes getting into a cold vehicle, it does make it incredibly easy for thieves to steal your vehicle. There were some incidents reported today of this very thing happening.

Tomorrow morning, be sure to drive cautiously.
