Oh, the carefree days of summer in Amarillo. I think we are all ready for those warm summer days. OK, there will be a few cranky people out there complaining about the heat. They just need to cool off.

Luckily, Amarillo has a great way for the family to cool off. When I was growing up in Chicago the closest thing we had to cool off in was when the city would open up the fire hydrants. We kids would rush outside and enjoy the cool down.

Amarillo has a better solution for that. We have our city pools. We do take advantage of those but there is something even easier for a quick cool-off. Some of our city parks have splash pads. Oh, and how do the kids love them?

We know the summer is getting close when there is word that they are about to open up. We got official word from Amarillo Parks and Recreation. We are less than a month away.

Last summer was the first time I got to experience the splash pads firsthand. That is when I learned a very valuable lesson. Always make sure you keep a towel in the car. You never know when your granddaughter will decide she wants to get soaked.

An innocent trip to the park turned into less swinging and more splash pad time. So I had to run home while she was playing with mom and grab a towel. Now we just keep one back there.

Summer is near and the splash pads are about to be open. Be ready I know the family is. Summer fun is just around the corner with our city splash pads.
