Not Your Average Garage: The Secret Amarillo Transformation Taking Over the West Side of Sixth

I love to see the landscape of Amarillo changing. Take a drive, and you will see what I am talking about. The arrival of new local businesses definitely makes that drive worthwhile.

While driving down Sixth recently, and yes, I’m sticking with 'Sixth' for accuracy, I noticed something new. It's not Sixth Street technically. It's Sixth Avenue, but that doesn't sound as cool and hip. Does anything?

Here is where things get interesting. There is a bar that opened early last year. The Blind Pig. They have a lot going on with live music and cold drinks. You can find them at 6th and Independence.

The Transformation: From Al's Custom Upholstery to Al's Garage

What's interesting is that there was more work being done on that little piece of land recently. What once housed Al's Custom Upholstery is turning into a cool place to hang out and grab a bite.

Keeping the feel of the former tenant but bringing some very cool vibes, it is turning into Al's Garage.

A place to get a good burger and a cold drink. There will be two areas: Al's Backyard and the aforementioned Al's Garage.

Memorial Day Kickoff: What to Expect in Al's Backyard

The plan, according to owner Ryan Thurman, is to have the backyard opened around Memorial Day.

• Two bars
• Food truck
• Cornhole
• Fire pits
• Swings
• Live music during day on Saturdays.

Upscale Dining on Sixth: The Al's Garage Concept

Then the garage will have burgers, but will have more of an upscale menu. The garage will also have a front patio.

This is bringing some action on the other side of Sixth closer to Western Street. Just driving by and seeing the cool colors and the digital screen helps it all come to life.

So as they continue to work on the property and bring Al's Garage to life, just know that the opening date is fast approaching. There is soon to be another cool place to go and hang out at on Sixth. We can't wait.
