Amarillo College Brings Change in a Round About Way
There has been a section of Amarillo College that has been closed since before Thanksgiving. If you go to the campus for any reason you have noticed. If you drive in the area it involves a very much traveled road so you have also noticed.
The section of 24th and Washington on the college campus has been closed for many months. They have been working on it since then. There are many orange cones and signs and detours.
Living in the area I use that road a lot so I have learned which is the best way around but I will be happy when it is done and that road is open. I had wondered what they were doing. What improvement they were making that was taking more than half a year to finish.
I read something on social media about what was going on. Luckily, I got to see it firsthand the other day when I had to deliver a DoorDash to the Enrollment Center. The easiest place to park was in the First Bank Southwest Center (the gym area) and walk across 24th.
Even the person I was delivering to wondered where I parked and how I got there. She was hoping there was an area open on 24th to get down now. There was not. It was ok, it wasn't a long walk and I got to see what this project on 24th and Washington really was.
They are putting in a roundabout. Great. We have a few areas in Amarillo that already have round about and I always see people confused about how to use them. The first one I had experienced in Amarillo was in Townsquare. Since I DoorDash I have experienced them in other neighborhoods.
I Googled the purpose of a roundabout:
Roundabouts promote a continuous flow of traffic. Unlike intersections with traffic signals, drivers don't have to wait for a green light at a roundabout to get through the intersection. Traffic is not required to stop – only yield – so the intersection can handle more traffic in the same amount of time.
I get it. Amarillo College is progressing a lot. It has changed so much since I went there in the nineties. I just hope this roundabout doesn't cause a lot of confusion. Maybe this is the best way to get people accustomed to them. Start them off driving through them when they are going to school.
