There are deliveries in Amarillo that go smoothly, and then there are some that just don’t. Sometimes the customer is difficult. Other times, the restaurant is swamped, and it takes forever to get the food out the door.

When Deliveries Don’t Go As Planned

As a delivery driver, you can feel like you’ve done everything right—only to realize this time, you were the problem. An honest mistake happens, and there’s nothing you can do to fix it.

Recently, I had to pick up an order that included a large bag of food and a small pizza box. I loaded everything into my insulated catering bag to keep it warm and headed out.

A Small Detour Leads to Frustration

On the way, I noticed I was passing a Quick Trip and thought I’d grab an iced tea after the delivery. I dropped off the food, but when I stopped for tea, they were out of ice. Frustrated, I decided to swing by my house for a drink instead.

While at home, I got a notification that the order had been changed. That happens sometimes, but I didn’t think much of it. I headed back out for my next stop.

The next order was ice cream, which I always keep separate in a special cold bag in my trunk or up front in the A/C. I dropped that off and continued on my route.

The Forgotten Pizza

When I got to the following pickup and went to place food in my catering bag, I realized the small pizza from earlier was still inside. My heart sank. I had forgotten to drop it off.

I felt awful. I wished the customer had reached out so I could fix it immediately, but they contacted the delivery service instead. Eventually, the pizza was delivered—but the customer had to wait. I couldn’t help but imagine it was meant for a kid, and maybe they were disappointed or even in tears.

The Guilt That Followed

I still think about it. It was an honest mistake, but one I wish I could have fixed right away. Hopefully, the family understood that sometimes even delivery drivers slip up.
