The End of the School Bell? Amarillo ISD’s New “Game Changer” for 2026
Things are changing in Amarillo. Sometimes change is scary, but most of the time it turns out to be something really good. The recent change that the Amarillo Independent School District has announced is one of those things that is good for Amarillo.
We have found since the Pandemic for sure that it is possible to learn from home. That is not always the best solution for everyone, but for many families, that is something that would be welcomed for their student.

Yes, there is always the option to homeschool, but maybe that is not possible with a family's work schedule. So maybe there is a way to have the best of both worlds. A great education with the flexibility of the student not having to go to school every day.
Colleges have been successful with both in-class, online, and even hybrid classes. They can balance their education with their home life and still get a quality education. That is not limited to a college education anymore.
Changing the Game: What is Amarillo ISD Online?
Amarillo Independent School District has found a way to make things work:
We’re changing the game for public school and school choice. Introducing Amarillo ISD Online. School choice for Texas students is here, with fully virtual or hybrid options. Amarillo ISD Online is opening for grades 6 - 12 in the 2026-2027 school year. Dedicated, certified teachers lead instruction in advanced academics, foreign language, PE, art, electives and more.
Looking Ahead: When Will Elementary Options Be Available?
Now, this is not for every student. There are those who thrive only in an in-class setting, but for those for whom this will benefit, it is great to have this option. For those wondering about younger students, even the elementary level is slated for a virtual reboot in the near future.
We anticipate expanding to elementary beginning with the 2027-2028 school year. -Amarillo Independent School District
The Social Component: How the Hybrid Model Keeps Kids Connected
There are different families that will benefit from these options. The worry that kids will not get the social skills needed shouldn't really be a concern because the hybrid option gets them some in-class time. Even without that, there are still options around town to get your kiddos out and with others their age.
This is just a great new option that is available at AISD starting next year, and there are a lot of families excited about it. This is a positive change.
