It's that time of year in Amarillo. We are a couple of weeks into the new year, and it's time for our first holiday, the first day of 2026, where we will see an interruption of service

School Districts and Daycare Holiday Schedules

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there will be several places closed. It's the first school holiday. Some daycares, which also follow the school calendar, are also closed. I know my granddaughter doesn't have daycare that day.

Federal and Financial Closures: Mail and Banking

There are the normal closures on any federal holiday. We will not have mail delivered that day. Oh, but Amazon will be out delivering. So will FedEx and other services like that. The United States Post Office will not be dropping off mail on Monday.

The banks around town will also be closed. That is one of the things I miss about working for a bank. The bank holidays were great. You can still use an ATM or do online banking but you can't stop off at a branch and make a deposit. That will have to wait until Tuesday.

City Services: What Remains Open on Monday?

The City of Amarillo also announced all of its closings as well:

In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the City of Amarillo has announced the schedule for the week of Monday, January 19.
Here’s what you need to know:
-City Offices & Services
City Hall, all Public Library locations, and Amarillo Municipal Court will be closed on Monday.
-Amarillo City Transit
Amarillo City Transit will operate on a normal schedule on Monday.
-Solid Waste Services
Residential Collection: Monday routes will be serviced on Tuesday, and Tuesday routes will be serviced on Wednesday.
Commercial Collection: Monday routes will be serviced on Tuesday.
Curbside Collection: collection services closed on Monday.
Landfill: closed Monday, reopening Tuesday.
Brush sites: closed Monday, reopening Tuesday.
-Golf Complexes
Ross Rogers and Comanche Trail Golf Complexes will have normal hours of operation on Monday.
Don't be caught by surprise by forgetting that Monday is a holiday. Coming so soon after the Christmas break, it’s easy to forget. Don’t be the parent trying to drop your child off at an empty school, trust me, it happens!
