I know we are always talking about how crazy the weather is here in Amarillo. I mean, many were wearing shorts on Christmas Day. The spring is not springing either. It's like we bypassed it and moved right on to summer. It seems we have had more hot days than cooler ones.

Summer in March: Amarillo’s Record-Breaking Temperature Shift

Oh, and did I mention that spring just recently started? So we have a lot of that left until we do finally make it to summer. The hot temperatures that we have been experiencing in our city have got people talking.

I have seen the question more than once about when the splash pads will open. They are not opening any earlier than normal just because Amarillo has gotten all crazy. I know we have experienced the 90s and have the possibility to hit 100 this week, but it is not changing the schedule.

Location Guide: Where to Find All of Amarillo Splash Pads

Amarillo has fourteen splash pads that will open in May:

- Benton Park
- Bones Hooks Park
- City View Park
- Eastridge Park
- El Alamo Park
- Forest Hill Park
- Gene Howe Park (Martin Road)
- Glenwood Park
- Hamlet Park
- Medical Center Park
- Memorial Park
- San Jacinto Park
- Southlawn Park
- Westover Park
The splash pads typically open Mother's Day weekend, and that still is the case. The official opening date is May 9 this year. So don't go all crazy thinking just because it is really hot, the splash pads would magically be turned on.

Backyard Solutions: How to Stay Cool Until Mother’s Day Weekend

It doesn't work that way. I even reached out to make sure that was correct, and I was told that yes, the splash pads will be opening on May 9. Until then, the garden hose might be your best friend. You can even splash around in a pool in your backyard. Maybe even invest in water guns and balloons.
If you are looking for an opening day for our one outdoor city pool that will be open this year, Thompson Park will open on May 24th. The other two are still under evaluation for possible future repairs.
It is going to be hot, and it's still only March. Welcome to Amarillo and the crazy weather we get to enjoy.
