Another Shooting In Amarillo. Getting Worse Before It Gets Better?

No, I'm not about to wax poetic about a gun problem in Amarillo. I don't care where you go in the country, there are guns everywhere.

What I do want to talk about is the silly things being done by people with guns.

Yesterday, there was a police officer-involved shooting at the 1200 block of North Hill St. that left one man, 26-year-old Ernesto Pena, dead.

So why was Pena shot? While we don't have the full story, and I'm not here to speculate, here's what we know.

Pena was pulled over by APD. It was then that Pena pulled out a gun. As the officer saw him pull it out, he reached for his and shot Pena.

We don't know why Pena was pulled over, and we also don't know if he was just taking the gun out to let the officer know he had one on him. Again, I'm not here to speculate.

What I don't understand is why we seem to have an influx of these types of shootings. I remember when police officers said the only time they really ever even reached for their gun was at the shooting range.

Now it seems they have to have a hand on it or nearby anytime they interact with a civilian. So will the gun issues in Amarillo get worse before they get better? Will they ever get better?
