It's something we all deal with here in Amarillo and West Texas in general, and it's a pain of an issue. Believe me, it's not just you that's having this problem, so don't start feeling like you can't figure out what you're doing wrong.

One day you walk out your front door, and your walk is absolutely littered with these big ants. There are hundreds of them roaming around, some frantically moving. You look around and notice a pretty good size hole in your yard.

Yup, the army ants have invited themselves to setup camp at your residence. You see them constantly moving in and out of that hole and it seems like the string of them never ends. That's really because they don't.

Army ants band together in huge colonies of up to 200,000 ants, sometimes even more. There are more than 200 different species of them, so plenty of opportunity for them to setup camp at your place.

This year however, you may have thought you were off the hook. You haven't seen them roaming around, and this is typically the time of year they like to invade. Well, they're running a bit behind schedule this summer.

The weather has played a big part in it as its been fluctuating from wet to dry, then back to wet again. Now that we've been relatively dry for a bit, we can start to expect to see them popping up.

Your first immediate thought it "I have to get some ant killer", but that won't be enough sadly. With colonies so big, you need more than just a spray to rid yourself of them. The recommendation is to find a bait they can pick up and take back to the colony.

As they all start to feast on the bait, you will find those ants dissipate in a relatively quick fashion. Now, you don't HAVE to do anything about it if you don't want. Army ants have a tendency to hang around for about 3-4 weeks, then they will naturally disappear if you just leave them alone.

It's important to note though that if you have kids or pets, you don't want to let them out around the area where the colony is if you see them present.
