Dasher Diary: An Unexpected Surprise During a Recent Amarillo Delivery

When you are out delivering food in Amarillo you never know what is going to happen on each delivery. It can be a quick and easy drop-off. You can end up with a long wait time at a restaurant. You could have problems finding the address of your delivery.

There are so many things that can affect a delivery. It's how you handle it that makes the difference. Recently I was sitting in my delivery zone waiting for an order to come through. When one does you see the restaurant you have to go to. You will also see either the delivery area or the exact address depending on which service you are delivering for at the time.

DoorDash gives you the exact drop-off location, and Uber Eats gives you a general location. So you may not for sure know. Recently I was delivering for DoorDash when an order came up. I have to pick up from Five Guys and deliver out to Bushland. Quite a far drive.

I knew this delivery would eat up probably an hour of my time. I was hoping that it was a family order with a lot of food. The hopes were that the tip would make this long delivery worth it.

I decided to gamble and accept the order. That is when I saw that I was picking up a single burger and a single order of fries. That was the whole order. So I was fearful of the outcome. I got the food and headed out to Bushland. This house was not right off of I40 either. I had many twists and turns to get to my location.

When I got there I dropped off the food and returned to my car. I usually sit there for a minute because while delivering by time I don't see the pay until I hit confirm that the order was dropped off.

That is when I saw that the customer tipped seven dollars. Which is not a bad tip at all if I am driving a short distance. I am using my car and my gas and all of that. So making seven dollars from the customer is not the best. It is absolutely not the worst either. I was also making about another seven dollars for my time from DoorDash since I was delivering by time.

So this delivery was about fourteen dollars. As I was sitting in my car writing all my stuff down. I keep good notes when I am out delivering I saw a guy walking up to my car. My first thought is "Oh no, was the order wrong"? Was something missing?

A Very Pleasant Delivery Surprise

The guy walking out to my car was the father of the customer I just delivered to. He couldn't believe his daughter had a delivery all the way from Amarillo. I was impressed that this daughter and father had a conversation about the delivery. That doesn't always happen.

So as the dad was telling me all of this he said he didn't know what she tipped me but he wanted to come out and make sure it was worth my time and he handed me a twenty-dollar bill.

I thanked him profusely and told him how much he really made my day. He really did. I am so appreciative that I accepted that order because that extra bonus really made it worth it and helped me reach my money goal for the day.
