Did You Know The Texas Panhandle Offers Youth Lacrosse?
Here in Amarillo, we have a lot of kids who play sports. We also have a lot of different options for the kids to choose from, and that's a good thing.
We all know that football is king around these parts. I didn't realize just how big it was until I had parents on my kids' baseball teams disappear for an entire season in the fall to go play football, then come back to baseball in the spring.
But amongst all the different sports offered here in Amarillo, there is one I just never seemed to hear about or see. It was THE sport to be playing as I was finishing up high school and saw a massive uptick in popularity back then.
I'm talking about lacrosse. You know, that sport where people are running around with these sticks that have nets on them and they are throwing this hard rubber ball back and forth to each other.
It was almost a strange spinoff of football, baseball, and soccer all wrapped up into one. Well, I came across something the other day and it made me happy, even though I've never attempted to play a game of lacrosse in my life.
The panhandle DOES indeed have youth lacrosse in town, but it feels like no one knows about it. I mean, I didn't know about it and I'm pretty good at having my finger on the pulse of youth sports offered in a city.
The Panhandle Lacrosse Authority is alive and well, and giving an opportunity for kids to play a sport they may have never even heard of. It's got the running of soccer, the hand-eye coordination of baseball, and the toughness and roughness of football all wrapped up into one.
Check out the Facebook page if your kids have been mentioning lacrosse, and even if they haven't, maybe show it to them. Who knows, they may find a love for a new sport.
