Within every cities history, there are things we just didn't know about. Amarillo is no different.

From the airport, to The Big Texan and more, there's interesting tidbits about these places that were almost hidden or just not really known about. I'm here to give you just a few of the interesting (and cool) ones that I wasn't aware of.

RICK HUSBAND AIRPORT HAS THE THIRD LARGEST RUNWAY IN THE WORLD

But it doesn't stop there. Because it's so long, did you know that the runway was actually an alternate landing site for the space shuttle? I don't believe it's ever been used for that, but still. Could you imagine the space shuttle landing right here in Amarillo?

THE BIG TEXAN WAS FEATURED ON TV

The hosts of the show "Man Vs. Food" rolled into town to give the 72 ounce steak challenge a go at The Big Texan. One of the hosts, Adam Richman, successfully completed the challenge and is one of the only 16% of people to complete it. The other host, the late Anthony Bourdain, declined to even give it a go.

OPRAH WINFREY LIVED IN AMARILLO...FOR A SHORT TIME

Back in 1998, Oprah made her temporary home here. She had been sued by the cattle industry for claims that Mad Cow Disease was caused by American beef. She won...then went back to her permanent home. She also filmed her show temporarily from the Amarillo Little Theatre.

So there's just a few of the things I found rather interesting about Amarillo history that I didn't know about. I know there's a whole lot more, but hey, we only have so much time right?
