It gets mentioned how much we love our food in Amarillo. There is no surprise that we have plenty of places to go and choose from for our next great meal. It doesn't matter what kind of food you like; odds are you will find something to your liking in Amarillo.

The problem with having so many places to choose from is that there is not enough time and money to try every place out. We tend to have our favorites, and sometimes we stray from that, but sometimes we don't.

We will try a new place when it opens. We want to always be the first to try the hot new thing. Sometimes those places stick, and sometimes they give it a run, but in the end, there is something that forces them to close.

From the Bus to 6th Street: The Rise of a Local Favorite

That was what happened with Dillo's Burger Bus. They started out just like that, on a bus. The first and only place where you could go inside the vehicle and order. They had a few places inside where you could eat as well. There were no other food trucks like that.

It worked for them enough that they ended up getting their own permanent location on Sixth. The food was good when I tried it. So I wasn't surprised to see them get that location.

September 2025: The First Signs of Trouble

The location on Sixth lasted over a year before they closed it in September of 2025. They went back to the original Dillo's, which rolled out on the bus and would show up to serve some great burgers.

Then they went a little quiet. I overheard some friends talking about Dillos and wanting to know what happened. I went to their Facebook page, but there wasn't much there. Then it's like someone was thinking what we were and asked the question on the Amarillo Restaurant Reviews....At Your Own Risk page.

Mechanical Failures: Why the Mobile Bus Went Quiet

Finally, the answer came with a message to Dillos. The answer was not what we wanted to hear:

Hello, we shut down all locations. We shut down the restaurant in September due to not enough traffic, and [we] shut the bus down two weeks ago due to mechanical issues. I'm sorry. -Dillos Burger Bus

I don't know what is in the future for Dillo's Burger Bus. Maintaining a vintage vehicle for commercial use presents a unique set of challenges. I reached out to owner Tyler Rannals:

Hey! I honestly have no plans to reopen soon!

What’s Next for the Amarillo Burger Scene?

We hate to hear of a restaurant closing down. Who knows what the future holds? Whether the bus eventually returns to the road or Tyler moves on to a new venture, we know great things are on the horizon.
