Does This Amarillo Street Sign Really Have a Misspelling?
Sometimes there are some street signs in Amarillo that you see and just scratch your head. Do you wonder if that thing is misspelled? Or maybe it is some word you really never heard of. I mean I don't know all of the words. So maybe.
Our street names in Amarillo are sometimes fun to watch. We have a neighborhood where all of the streets are named after wines out in the Vineyards. We have streets all named after Beatles references out in Strawberry Fields. We have streets that are named after different United States presidents.
Then we just have street names. It seems that words are sometimes just made up and thrown on a sign. I know that really is not true but there are so many streets and so many signs that need names. So I guess it is possible.
I used to live on Pittsburg Street here in Amarillo. In fact that was the street where I bought my very first home. I thought when I first saw the house that the street name was misspelled. It was not. I mean there is a city in California spelled that way. I would, any time I gave out my address tell them it is Pittsburgh without the h. It was just easier.
So I knew that was not a misspelling. I don't just assume that they are. I was given a street name recently and told it was misspelled. I looked it up. I used Google. I phoned a friend. The message from my coworker was that our street Neuches here in Amarillo was supposed to be spelled Neuces.
Heck, I don't even know how you pronounce either of those words. So who knows if those are real words or not? All I know is the street in question is off of North Grand Street.
When I look up the word Neuches all that comes up is the street here in Amarillo. Nothing else. When I look up Neuces there are a lot more words and meanings listed. There is a river, a county, and even a brewing company with that name. It is the Spanish word for walnuts or nuts. So that is a real word.
I don't see anything much about Neuches. I am not pointing any fingers here but that just may be an Amarillo word.
