When it comes to the end of the year in Amarillo, there tends to be a closing or two that they try to sneak in before the ball drops. This year was no different. As we were bringing in the new year, we said goodbye to another restaurant.

The History of Denny's in Amarillo

Once upon a time, we had a few Denny's in town. There was one on Georgia Street, one on Ross Street, and one off Airport Blvd as part of the Flying J Travel Center.

The first one we lost was towards the end of 2024. The Georgia Street location closed down. That was the one we always went to as a family. It was the one that we spent every Christmas Eve at when we were in town. It was our tradition.

Once that location closed, we still had two more. I’ll admit I rarely remembered the one at the Flying J.  I figured that was where most truckers or people driving through town went to. The one on Ross was where we spent this past Christmas Eve for our traditional dinner.

Why the Flying J Location Closed Its Doors

A few days after that dinner, I received a message here at the station:

Dennys I 40 East closed the doors this morning permanently. Exit 76. Rent went up and they aren't making money - Danny

So I wanted to make sure I had the correct location so when I asked if that was the one that was part of the Flying J, he let me know that was the correct one. We are now down to one single Denny's in town.

Where to Go for 24-Hour Eats Now

In a time when it seemed like Denny's was the go-to location that was open twenty-four-hours now it seems not to be the case. Yes, we have always had IHOP, Waffle House, and Cattleman's Cafe for overnight eats. Denny's always seemed to be busy, too.

Keeping the Holiday Tradition Alive on Ross Street

Apparently, they weren't busy enough to keep multiple locations open. We are down to just the one in Amarillo now. At least we still have one for our family to visit on Christmas Eve.
