People in Amarillo love Sixth Street. We have so many antique shops and restaurants that people love to visit. During the summer we have hosted the Route 66 festival there because that is right where Route 66 runs through our city.

Sixth Street is a big part of Amarillo. So when I tell you that Sixth Street, or 6th Street, does not really exist in Amarillo it could bring some big emotions. There was a discussion about it online recently and some of the comments got heated.

No, Sixth Street is really not in Amarillo no matter what you think you remember. It just is not. If you drive to where you remember having been to 6th Street and look, you will realize after all of those years that it is actually 6th Avenue.

Don't believe me? Check it out.

Part of Route 66 is on 6th Avenue and not 6th Street like we have thought and said for so many years. Why did we start and continue to call it 6th Street? I don't know. Maybe it just flows off the tongue a lot easier.

I mean anyone who lives here knows where it is. What might be confusing is for anyone who is new to the area or visiting. If they put into Google Maps 6th Street and they are actively searching for it, that might get confusing. I still think that even that is not that big of a deal.

What I do find amusing is that we don't have a 6th Street. Nope, our numbered streets are all avenues. Apparently we just do what we want here in Amarillo. That is just how we roll.

Sixth Street Over The Years - WOW! What A Change!

Amarillo's Georgia Street and All It's Changes

The streets of Amarillo have changed a lot. Georgia Street used to be the place to buy a car. Now it has everything.
