Tacos Garcia Opening: New Life for Iconic Amarillo Building

It seems that since the new year in Amarillo, all we have heard is bad news. We lost a Denny's and a Chicken Express in Amarillo. It's about time to turn the news around to something a little more positive.

Out With the Old: The Ross Street Closure

Back in October, that is when we first learned that Jorge's Tacos Garcia, which was on Ross Street, was closing. The good news is that they were going to move it to 1619 S Kentucky.

A Historic Location: 1619 S Kentucky at Wellington Square

That location was most recently Senor Chubby's, which didn't last long. It also housed Leal's Mexican Restaurant, and years before that is where you would go to enjoy Gardski's.

It has been sitting empty as of late. That emptiness is gone, as that is now the home of Tacos Garcia. Since they announced the move, their former building also been put up for auction. The old location closed around Christmas.

They hinted last week on their social media that the new location would be opening soon.

When I drove by this past weekend, I noticed something that gave me a lot of hope. A new sign and new banners saying "We are open." I drove in to get photos and to check to see if they were open.

Another customer had the same idea as he drove up and walked up to the door. While the permanent sign on the door listed daily hours, a paper sign noted they were closed on Sundays. It was probably because those banners went up late Saturday or on Sunday, so that people saw the signs and knew they weren't open that day.

What to Expect: Familiar Favorites in a Fresh Space

So that just leads me to believe that they are now open. This is great news for my family because it is so close to home. It's good for Amarillo because it puts a familiar face into that location. You know what to expect from Jorge's Tacos Garcia, and it is always good food.
