Instead here we are having to warn about another new scam. Earlier the scam involved lost pets. Now the new one is targeting families that have loved ones behind bars. The scam starts with a phone call.
What is the Newest Scam in Amarillo?
That phone call informs the family member that because of overcrowding their loved one will be released. As a condition of their release, they will need to wear an ankle monitor. Then they are asked for the money to purchase that ankle monitor.
The family member sends money but no monitor is bought. That money goes right to the scammer and there is never a release of the loved one behind bars. When in doubt always check. Do your research. Hang up and call the jail or prison directly. Don't take the word of the caller, ever. Verify.
According to the Randall County Sheriff's Office:
We have received reports of a new scam targeting family members of inmates in the Randall County Jail. Scammers are calling and falsely claiming that, due to overcrowding, their incarcerated family member will be released and placed on an ankle monitor. They are then instructed to send money to cover the cost of the monitor.
Please be aware and cautious of phone calls you may receive. If you have any concerns, hang up and call the Randall County Sheriff's Office at 806-468-5800.
