Regents Give Final Budgetary Approval For New West Texas A&M Stadium
The last administrative step towards construction of a new football stadium for West Texas A&M has been cleared. The Texas A&M System Board of Regents approved yesterday a $38.8 million-dollar budget for the new on-campus football stadium for West Texas A&M University in Canyon. The project is now cleared to begin construction and is scheduled to commence in May. It is hoped the facility will be completed by August of 2019.
Expectations are elevated in regards to the impact the new stadium will provide the university and the city of Canyon as a whole, other than being the place the WT Buffaloes host their home football games. It is hoped the addition will increase visitors to both the city and the campus.
When it was decided to pursue a new facility, a major motivator was the exorbitant cost to upgrade the 58 year old Kimbrough Memorial Stadium, even less attractive at it’s la grange point outside of both Canyon and Amarillo. Since the new stadium was announced Kimbrough was purchased by Canyon ISD.
